Versions

The Neuropterida Species of the World (NSW) is an integrating resource that contains web site and database elements. Both classes of elements are updated episodically. Significant one-time or cumulative updates are sequentially numbered as new ‘versions.’ Smaller updates – to data, functionality, or both – made between version breaks are treated as ‘releases.’ In the tables below, the states of the NSW on the dates of initial release of several of the versions, and sometimes the active release, are provided for a variety of documentary data. Table 4 provides information on release dates and selected benchmark metrics and highlights; table 5 gives counts for several classes of data of nomenclatural and taxonomic interest; table 6 presents publication usage data (cumulative page accesses) for several NSW pages; table 7 summarizes design and functionality changes; table 8 displays links to an archive of “snapshots” of selected NSW pages; and table 9 provides data on the size and scope (record and column counts) of the primary data tables used to deliver the NSW.

Interval Changes
Version 8.0 –8.xx General: Updated Google Analytics scripts to GA4.
Search Results page: Reimplemented the former Catalog Record column as the new Epithet Record column. Replaced the former text-based links on taxon names in the Catalog Record column with a new set of icon-base links in the Epithet Record column.
Epithet Record page (formerly the Catalog Record page): Page completely redesigned and reimplemented. Focus of page changed to concentrate on matters of strict nomenclature of neuropterid species group names, particularly type data. Page divided into four text blocks (Taxonomy: 5 lines [1 conditional]; Nomenclature: 8 lines [2 conditional]; Nomenclatural Type: 3 lines [1 conditional]; and Data: 3 lines) and four new tables (Type Specimens; Specimen Parts; Type-Related Nomenclatural Acts; and Type-Related Literature Extracts) newly implemented from new datasets. The four new tables are based on new NSW data sets.
Monograph Record Page (page updated): Added a Monograph Record Links line to the top left of the page; this provides convenient icon-based links to various data-table pages linked from the Monograph Record page. Removed the former Citations and Figures tables to separate data-table pages and updated their page lines with appropriate icon-based page links. Added a new line to data-table page Phylogenetic Trees. Updated the Keys line with a new icon-based link. Added a new Types table with new icon-based links to the Epithet Record page.
Taxon Citation page (new page): This page reimplements data formerly displayed in the Citations table on the Monograph Record page. The table was moved to facilitate future growth of the Monograph Record page.
Figure Citation page (new page): This page reimplements data formerly displayed in the Figures table on the Monograph Record page. The table was moved to facilitate future growth of the Monograph Record page.
Phylogenetic Trees page (new page): This new page is based on a new NSW data set and provides data and links to phylogenetic trees in the published literature that contain particular species as identified terminal taxa.
Version 7.0 – 7.4 General: Added Google Analytics scripts to principle pages.
Monograph Record Page: Added a Congener Navigation Control (upper right) to facilitate navigation among the Monographic Record pages of congeneric species. Added a Citations table that contains topic-annotated literature citations (an analog of the annotated synonymical listings typical of print catalogues and revisions). Initial implementation of Citations table contained two user-selectable table-sorting options and ca. 20 selectable topic set options. Added flag-icon-based links in Countries table to link out to publically released modules in the LDL Country Faunas series. Added Viewer links in the Scientific Names and Synonyms blocks.
Version 6.0 – 6.8 General: Code base transferred to GitHub July 2020. Added new icons for NSW Main and NSW Monograph Record pages. Added a uniform set of icon tooltips throughout. Removed Help page link from bottom navigation bar. A poll of the Neuropterology community confirmed little to no recent usage of this old NSW feature. Needed help functionality is being reimplemented in a distributed manner throughout the site, particularly via tooltips and Table Legends. Added new show/hide table legend icons throughout the work.
Classification Page: Increased the number of ranks displayed in the Classification table from five to eight -- order, suborder (new), superfamily (new), epifamily (new), family, subfamily, tribe, and subtribe. Linked the Classification table record set dynamically to the underlying Neuropterida Species of the World dataset (NSW), so that it automatically updates when new NSW datasets are released.
Search Results Page: Transferred links in the Monograph Record column of the Search Results table from scientific name text strings to a new column of NSW Monograph Record page icons.
Monograph Record Page: Consolidated icons in Figures table into a single Links column to improve table organization and facilitate addition of new links. Added a new link column for PDFs available for viewing in the LDL Viewer module. Standardized presentation order of literature-related link icons across the page. Consolidated icons in the Geographic Distribution: Country Records table to improve table organization and facilitate addition of new links.
References Page: Regrouped icons on left side of page into a single Links column to improve table organization and facilitate addition of new links. Added a new link column for PDFs available for viewing in the LDL Viewer module.
Miscellaneous: Completed and implemented a thorough update of the higher classification of the world Neuropterida. Code base transferred to GitHub (July 2020) to facilitate versioning and future growth and development.
Version 5.0 – 5.xx General: Implemented new icons for links to digital literature files and to Bibliographic Record pages of the LDL Bibliography of the Neuropterida.
Search Results Page: Implemented access to a new suite of pages, the Monograph Record pages, through the establishment of new links placed on scientific names displayed in the Current Name column.
Monograph Record Page: Added a new set (ca. 7600) of interactive data synthesis pages -- the Monograph Record pages. Each Monographic Record page aggregates the Neuropterida Species of the World data that is available for a particular valid species or subspecies. The initial data blocks included on the Monograph Record page were: Taxonomic Status, Scientific Names [Short Form, Long Form, Original Combination (species), Original Combination (subspecies), Nomenclatural Gender Forms (species), Nomenclatural Gender Forms (subspecies)], Synonyms [with combo box option: Show All Synonyms, Hide Synonyms, Show Original Combination Synonyms Only, Show Synonymw with Available Names Only, Show Synonyms with Unavailable Names Only], Figures [with Hide Figures Table link and Show|Hide Table Key], Keys [with 'Show a list of Keys' link], Geographic Distribution [Summary Statement, Notes, Countries|Country Records (with combo box options: Show Countries (no duplicates or sources), Show Country Records (with duplicates and sources), Hide List)], Lithostratigraphic Distribution [Summary Statement], Temporal Distribution [Extant/Extinct, Temporal Range], Primary Type(s) [Kind / Sex / Repository, Type Locality (quote), Type Locality (interpreted and standardized), Age, Stratum], Dataset Timestamps [tblLdlSpCat].
References: Added icon-based Bibliography of the Neuropterida, Bibliographic Record page links to the references table; updated Table Key.
Citation Page: Removed page; moved all citation data to the Main page.
Versions Page: Divided the "summary and comparative data" table into two separate tables: "version dates, benchmark metrics, and highlights" and "species-group names and valid taxa". Added a new Monograph Record Pages column to the "version dates, benchmark metrics, and highlights" table to enable tracking of future growth of the Monograph Record page suite. Added five new columns (Non-Neuropterida, Valid Extant Species, Valid Extant Subspecies, Valid Extinct Species, Valid Extinct Subspecies) to the "species-group names and valid taxa" table to expanded tracking of comparative taxonomic and nomenclatural data. Divided the "usage data and page archive" table into two separate tables: "usage statistics" and "page archive". Added four new columns (Introduction, Catalogue Record, Monograph Record, and Versions) to the new "usage statistics" table to enable tracking of usage on additional pages; removed the Classification column from the same table (in anticipation of moving classification display functionality to a more flexible format in a new LDL module). Added one new page (Monograph Record) to the new "page archive" table. Added a new table ("principal data tables") to document size and scope of the primary datasets that support the NSW module.
Bottom Navigation Bar: Removed Citation page link.
Version 4.0 – 4.xx Main Page: Modified to directly display author contact information and publication citation data; Introduction button added.
Introduction Page: Table formats updated to LDL standard; higher classification table moved to new Classification page.
Classification Page (new): Static higher classification table formerly located on Introduction page moved to new Classification page and table dynamically linked to dataset of active release; table data extended to display information on whether each higher taxon contains Holocene and/or pre-Holocene taxa.
Simple and Advanced Search Pages: Added functionality to search for species-group and subinfrasubspecific ranked name epithets.
Search Results Page: Improved display of search parameters on Search Criteria line; improved readability of Search Results table by removing subgeneric name epithets to a separate column; added Current Name field to Search Results table; removed Combination field from Search Results table; added functionality to display species-group and subinfrasubspecific ranked names to Search Results table.
Contacts Page: Removed page; moved contacts data to the Main page.
Versions Page: Redesigned and reimplemented page; table formats updated to LDL standard; implemented '(active release)' line in Tables 4 and 5 to allow tracking of selected data parameters between formal versions.
Log In Page (new): Added Log in functionality to NSW module.
Bottom Navigation Bar: Added new Log In page link; removed Contacts page link.
Version 3.0 – 3.xx General: Complete backend code rewrite for the Neuropterida Species of the World module.
